The Roof of the St. Pius Church – Cologne, Germany
The concept of the roof of the main body of the St. Pius church in Cologne shows an innovative use of specific static features of glass, mainly the favorable bearing of pressure. A spatial glass truss girder is the main bearing element. All the pressure parts of the truss girder are designed as glass panes; tension is transferred by glass fibers and steel cables.
Due to the use of a holographic-optical foil a remarkable luminous quality of the interior had been accomplished thanks to an incidence of diffused light and color effects. The design came to existence in RWTH Aachen, the concept has been verified by means of a 1:4 model. The project was exhibited on Glasstec fair 2002 in Düsseldorf.
